Barmen Simatupang was born in Jakarta in 1970.
He studied photography at the Fine Art Photography Faculty – Open Class Program, The Corcoran School of Art, Washington DC, in 1997, and photojournalism at the ANTARA Photojournalism Gallery in Jakarta in 2010.
He pursued studies in philosophy at the Driyarkara School of Philosophy (STFD), Jakarta, and studied Mass Communication at the London School of Public Relations.

Barmen is a photographer and visual storyteller whose work explores the intersections of documentary, fine art, and social change. Based in Bekasi, West Java, Indonesia, Barmen’s photography highlights themes of cultural identity, environmental degradation, and the daily realities of marginalized communities.
