On Philosophy
These portraits reflect his deep concern for the role of intellectuals in upholding democratic values and public reason within the national discourse. Philosophical thinkers, as wells of critical knowledge, wrestle with fundamental questions—their “barks” of inquiry stirring enlightenment of heart and mind. In this sense, philosophical thought transcends academic boundaries, crossing disciplinary lines to reach a broader, richer horizon of understanding. All fields of study we recognize today emerged from what was once called philosophia—the love of wisdom. In Indonesia’s intellectual history, these critical thinkers have made invaluable contributions to developing logical reasoning and ethical aspirations for communal life. For Barmen, photography bridges art and advocacy, sparking reflection and discussion that can lead to positive and just change.
Thirteen philosophical thinkers and critical intellectuals are showcased, each representing a different strand of thought. Their selection considered each individual’s scholarly domain—psychology, literature, cultural studies, socio‑politics, law, religion, ethics, and even astronomy. Each portrait combines documentary realism with staging that hints at personal stories: daily life, vitality, discipline, seriousness, warmth, and loyalty. For Barmen, such a “meeting” is a cherished moment—wise figures gathered in one space, sharing the same restless longing.
